We receive a lot of calls and e-mails regarding freon Filling: How often should I recharge my air conditioning with new freon?
Most people don't realize that air conditioners do not consume refrigerant (freon) as would consume oil, so if your maintaining your systems and in ideal conditions your freon would never need changing or filling. A low freon level indicates a leak in the system which should be repaired before adding more. While most new system connections are welded to minimize leaks, many older units (8+ years) were connected with mechanical flared fittings which can vibrate loose over the years, causing leaks.
